This is the first batch of the little critters I love to do now. You can tell that tese were the first by the glazing job and by how tiny tiny they are.

Burning bliss – A mind so bright that even her hair catches on fire. This sculpture was inspired by my own mind and thoughts. I have always been a day dreamer, sitting looking out the window in class or wanting to go to bed early, just to get lost in my own head. With that feeling of loving to imagine myself somewhere else, here she is with her hair in a calm but steady flame, symbolizing what warms and love I have for dreaming.
A fun first attempt to do a bit more with my sculptures. Here with the weight distribution are on two points that are on two different levels. I was a bit worried that she would collapse with her top weight being pretty heavy for the torso to carry but it held up. She did sink a big but you can’t see that, so I’m very pleased.

Here we were able to try salt firing at out teachers home. It was such a cool and cozy day with good conversation, fire and delicious food!

Stalwart – A steadfast and loyal protector. In the making of this sculpture, I wanted to create a figure with a interesting shape and aura, that could watch over once home from were they sat. with a lean and smooth body and a unique expression. I as the crafter, is very pleased with the final result with how they came alive in my hands.

Raku – Here are my three little objects I was able to have in the Raku firing. They are all about a handful each in size. This year it was a definite success for everyone involved, and that had to do with our new teacher that has done this more often than our other teacher that don’t have as much experience with the special firing technique.
So what is Raku? Well you could always google to find out more detail, but I can also give you a brief summary!
Raku is a special firing technique that originates from japan. In basic terms you will heat up your objects in either a gas or electric kiln, usually it’s round, were there is a smaller peep hole at the top, were you can see all the wears. During a 15-20 minute process you need to keep an eye on your goods to see that they heat up and start to grow, then bubble a bit and then when they are smooth again they are ready to be taken out.
The next step is to place the objects into something organic that is flammable, we used saw dust, however you can also use dry leaves, hair or dry compost. We place the objects in a metallic bin of sorts, were there is a layer of sawdust at the bottom. Then you sprinkle a bit more on top before closing the lid and letting the object cool down in the now smoak filled bin.
What happens in there is that because the object is very, very hot and being cooled down so uproperty, small cracks form in the glaze were the trapped smoak from the sawdust creeps in and stains the clay black. Here they can stay for a bit or until you have to use the bin again for the next batch of wears.
We take the objects out with tongs because they are still quite hot, and place them on the gras a bit to cool down further before then putting them in water so to quicken the process even more. Here after you can leave it as it is or take a metal brush and polish the piece a bit to make the surface shine.

By the river – A calm elf collection water in a ceramic jug. She is the first sculpture I made of a humanoid, and this is where I fell for making humans in sculpture. I also threw the ceramic jug she was holding. It was also very fun to make something so small on the pottery wheel.
PRIS: Not for sale. She holds a special place in my heart so I will keep her for now.

These are my three objects I had in our wood fired kiln. Its a very fun project that takes a whole day, just to fire the things! All in all it will take tree full days from placing your objects into the kiln to then taking them out again.
During our full day of firing We also tried to achieve something called reduction. That is when you reach a certain temperature inside the kiln, you want to limit the amount of oxygen coming into the kiln. If done correctly some glazes can shift into other colors because of the lack of oxygen during the firing. It wasn’t fully successful, so we didn’t get any cool reds. But nonetheless it was a very fun time.

Here was out very first project week were we got to work with 5kg! This is what I came up with, its a fantasy creature that I imagine to be a shadowy figure lurking about on dark nights.
